School is hard.

School is definitely hard. What I’m struggling with the most in terms of topics is Physics. Pain in the ass this class is. In terms of life, the lack of free time is daunting. I’m taking 18 hours of credits, with Physics and Calculus as co-requisites. My writing class so far has had virtually no homework, which is a godsend. This will prove to be a nightmare in the coming weeks however. Philosophy is a joke. Show up for 2 hours, listen to the professor rant about bullshit, rent a movie on netflix and talk about it in an online system with only one-way communication.

Me and my (ex) girlfriend

So my now ex girlfriend broke up with me a while ago. I believe, if I remember correctly off of the top of my head, it happened on August 15th. I’m not happy about it, and it was actually quite painful to deal with. Even now I still hurt, but it’s not nearly as bad. It’s most depressing just being alone. I know I need someone, and it’s hard not having anyone to be with. I’m staying single for the time being, but I’m not opposed to hookups/friends-with-benefits scenarios. If they happen though, I fully expect emotions to be involved, as I’m not one for a “cheap lay” so to speak. I’m a very emotional being and have my needs, you know? The one thing I’m gonna miss the most is going to be the cat we had. Molly was and is a great cat, and I’ll miss her dearly.

I can say that it’s a good thing we broke up though, she is a very unhealthy individual who needs to seek help in one form or another, as she’s incredibly emotionally undeveloped. I’ll take credit for my faults, but I really wonder how much was wrong, since I was incredibly limited on the things that I was allowed to do in the relationship and had virtually no control.

Why Can’t I Sleep?

For the past few nights now, I’ve been unable to drag myself from my computer to bed. Just writing this post is sort of rubbing the lemon juice in the wound. I honestly don’t know what it is, maybe Reddit is to blame? One thing I do know is that every night I stay up I get very tired. When I get tired, I get this itch. No, not one of those itches, I mean an itch to do something. Something like programming. I want to build a game very badly, but I have absolutely no skills in doing so. I can do basic C++ stuff, but even SDL is too much for me to wrap my head around right now. I’m actually considering picking up Java, since I hear it’s worlds easier to work with, and on top of that we have the Lightweight Java Game Library (LWJGL). This library is used in a particularly popular game known as Minecraft. I know it’s used in quite a few other games, one professional game being Spiral Knights. I don’t know… I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and do it.

In other news, I’m on a razor-thin edge to get my financial aid applications in. It’s been very difficult to do given my family’s financial situation and social climate. If I’m unable to get the information I need to into the financial aid office at my school by 5pm this coming monday, I get no aid. The fun part is that I only have Monday to do all this, and my mother’s piece of the puzzle is finally emerging (FINALLY!). Hopefully I actually make it on time… Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

It’s Been a Long Time

I can’t stop saying the title to this post in the voice of GLaDOS. It really has been a long time since I’ve last made a post here. In the timespan from the last update to this update, I’ve managed to move in with my girlfriend in our first apartment, change from Freight Crew to Deli, move into another apartment, and am now happily living right next to the school I’m going to. I’ve started my progress towards a Software Engineering Technology major. Life is moving forward.

In other news, I’ve got a dedicated server running at http://chb.sytes.net/ with a fancy webpage that I hand coded and everything (minus the forum and all). I’m running a Minecraft server, a Mumble voice server, a forum, and soon I’ll be hosting a Terraria server. Only thing I need now is a better CPU and much more RAM. 2GB just doesn’t cut it anymore with today’s demands. Of course, I actually have to get people playing on it first.

So far you’ve probably guessed by now that I play Terraria and Minecraft. Both of these games are good in their own respect, although Minecraft is beginning to get really boring. I’ve also played and beat Portal 2, then talked my girlfriend into getting it (she also got me a pre-order copy of it as a gift which was really sweet). Really awesome game, would play again. 10/10

I’ve also become a Redditor recently. It’s a nice change of pace compared to 4chan, but just as equally hivemindish and terrible. It’s a big reason why I haven’t written any C++ lately. I really need to start working on a project, but I don’t know of anything within my skillset to make that I’m interested in. Maybe that game I started writing using SDL…

./configure && make

It’s been a long while since I’ve made a post here, so it’st time to play a little bit of catch up.

My sister had her baby on May 4th! The baby’s name is Ava. She’s also now visiting and talking with us directly, which is really nice. It’s reduced a lot of stress for everyone except maybe her since she now has a new person to raise. I’m just relieved everything settled out the way it did.

In a more recent setting, I’ve had the entire last week off. It’s been really long and really relaxing, with the exception that I sliced one toe open, smashed another, and then rammed the side of my foot into the stove. My feet love me. I’ve been hanging out with my girlfriend a lot too, which is awesome. We generally get along pretty well, and she’s a really down-to-earth person. I’m also looking into some colleges a bit more seriously. My girlfriend is trying to convince me to go to SOU to get into this program that chops a year off of college for your degree, which sounds alright except for the fact that I don’t think SOU offers a very high quality programming class. I don’t know if I’ll even be able to afford the schools I want. I do know that OIT sounds like a very good option, and my good friend Atlas goes there. Still, $15,000 to $18,000 a year is a bit much.

In other news, I have afforded an iPod touch from Amazon for 180 dollars. It’s a sweet little dude, and I plan on hacking android onto it once the binaries for it are available. In the mean time, I intend on sharing a few app-store apps with you. Mind you I haven’t spent any actual money on app-store stuff, I have jailbroken my device and can now do things that apple says they don’t want people doing.

App Spot

Google Earth
Google Earth
Price: Free

This app is almost just like the one for the desktop, minus a few bells and whistles. You can flick around the globe, zoom in with pinch-to-zoom, all sorts of neat things. You can also click the GPS button for it to take you to where it thinks you’re at (accuracy may vary) It’s a great app to have on hand, and can replace a lot of other map-based apps you could possibly want. Loosely serves as a GPS tracker (will not do turn-by-turn navigation as far as I’m aware).

This quirky game by ngmoco lets you play god on your own little planet. You control elements in the world like the cloud or the sun and try and get the people to become your followers. The gameplay mechanics are akin to Farmville on Facebook, where there really is no end, you just keep leveling up and getting gold (and in this case, Awe, your source of power). Still, it’s a fun game for what it was past the glitches I kept running into. I had to play a cracked version since they haven’t released this to the iPhone/iPod in the US yet (only the iPad). It’s a free app nonetheless, so once it arrives, you’ll be able to play it immediately.

IMO
IMO: The World of Magic
Price: Free

This is an MMORPG for your iPhone/iPod. It has a really good control scheme and decent graphics/music. The spell/ability system is a bit iffy though, since you have to purchase the skill and then spend a skill point on it. Otherwise it breathes everything an MMO is and should be. This one has a feel akin to Maplestory meets Zelda: Minish Cap, along with Ragnarok. It’s a good time killer.

ozone
Ozone
Price: $4.99

This game is pretty much like the indie-hit Osmos in that it has an identical feel to the ‘character’ (air-bubble, mote, whatever they decide to call it). What’s different from Osmos, however, is that it has things like enemies, powerups, and objects aside from motes in it. It has true ‘level’ gameplay as opposed to Osmos’s arena-style gameplay. I’m actually quite addicted to it at the moment, as far as an iPod game can be addicted to.

This tool allows you to utilize your iPhone/iPod (or even iPad) as a wireless mouse and keyboard. You will need to set up a VPN server on your computer, which isn’t all that hard, and once you do you’ll have multitouch controls on the go. This even supports pinch to zoom in things like web-browsers. Very nifty app.

My Life as a Grocery Man

The last 7 days have been nothing but throwing freight for me. It’s been quite a ridiculous ride, and I gather from what I’m told that I just completed a ‘split week’, which means a 1 day weekend in between a long haul of work days. I now dislike my job severely because of it. This isn’t to say that nothing good came out of the week, as I now have a sizable paycheck (which will go promptly into my parents’ bank’s pockets), and I am now better at my job because of it. I also got some decent training recently, which was nice. Apparently I was not trained well, which I believe since the idiot who trained me is just as such: an idiot.

In other news, my dad just moved up to Salem for his new job! this is pretty cool, considering he’s gonna get a 20% pay raise by doing so, and a whole boatload of job security to boot. Plus, if he stays on long enough (I believe 5 years), the government pays him a pension for retirement. This means he can withdraw the current retirement money he has and we’ll be able to settle off financially and be somewhere near the green again, if not the yellow. We are now in the red.

A bit of grinding is going on as well. I’ve got a 14 hour project of ripping my dad’s CDs to mp3 so he can keep them on an iPod in Salem, whilst we get ready to move up there. He has no TV or internet, so it will keep him entertained, if only somewhat. It’s about 150 CDs, so that’s more than enough. I also have ripped half of them to date, but my CD ripping software tends to slow down and lock up on the larger jobs, and some of the CDs are either old or wrecked, so that presents itself as a problem as well. The other task I have is getting into the mid 90’s on my level in Ragnarok before the big competition on the 20th. This is, assuming I’ll be able to participate with work being so random. Ah… I wish we could get a castle… or perhaps for Kisuka to implement guild halls…

This was not a triumph…

Well, I didn’t wind up moving afterall. There were some really questionable things about the place that I didn’t really like, and I felt like I was obligated to move for a number of reasons I won’t discuss here.

Also, these are the ingredients to the best cake ever made in the history of mankind. 10 points to griffindor if someone guesses it correctly without having been told previously by me what it is.

[17:17] Congress: I don’t really know anything about writing programing from scratch, lol. But i can edit pre-existing code, which works well for most creators.
[17:18] Congress: They want someone who can code NEW things for guilds, though, which might throw a wrench into my plans to join that secion of creatordom

Welp, the big day is today (I think).

Just got off work… waiting for my bank statement to come in, stuck in my room hiding from a really bad danger of sorts. Once I get the $250 for my down payment/first months rent, I’m gonna be doing ok. Next up is foodstamps, or else I’ll be starving… Oh ya, maybe no internet for a while. That’s gonna be super-fun! I also got sent through the gauntlet last night at work to test for more hours sort of. It’s not an official test, but I’m doing it anyway to prove I’m a good worker. Part two happens this next tuesday (the 29th). So, I guess it’ the ‘good life’ for me from now on, if you can call it that. I think we’ll be ok though.

Home sweet Home, or something like that

Today, I go in to do a walk-through on a place some of my friends and I are going to be moving into. It’s sort of tiny and a lot of the insides are being redone. I’ve only seen this place so far from the outside, since I wasn’t the one that actually found the place. We’re gonna paint it (or it’s going to be painted, not sure which yet), so the nasty blue on the outside won’t be there anymore, nor will the painted on house numbers. I’m excited and scared at the same time, since it’ll be $233 per person a month. Luckily, my new night assistant-manager is a very fair person and very kind to me. I’ve been getting shorted on hours quite a bit, so much so to the point where I was working only one day a week. That gives me enough money to cover the bills, but nothing else. I suppose I’ll be operating off of food stamps sometime in the near future, although I don’t like the idea of that. I also want to go to college at RCC, but between my increased hours and maintaining a new home, I don’t think I’ll be able to. Oh well, I suppose. I’ll need to find a good part-time job that allows me to work every day of the week.

In other news, I’ve been using windows 7 more and more, and I’m slightly impressed. Although I’m not exactly happy with it hovering at .97GiB of ram usage while it’s idle, I do think it’s fairly snappy compared to Vista, and works great for my games. Albeit, I have 4.0GiB of RAM, 3.6 of which is currently usable under the 32-bit OS’s I run. Garry’s Mod is fun again, which is a major plus. I’m able to spawn a load of NPCs and do a giant war with vehicles I built (although they don’t react at all to props). I think one of these days I’m going to do a zombie-survival type match by myself. Internet games without friends are no fun. I also need to get the Aurora Cannon working, as that looked very interesting. Most of my addons function currently though, so I’m quite happy.

Also, I’m looking forward to the next rideo post. Atlas said he was going to post something about his ridiculous teacher’s syllabus, and I’ve already had a sample of that nonsense. I can’t wait for the post.

Freedom

After a good long 3 years of battling, I’m finally free from my grasps of the state. Here within the month, I’m going to receive my letter of approval or something like that. It feels really nice to be out of this mess. It’s scary too, because this was keeping me at home. I really don’t know whether or not I’m going to be able to survive on ‘my own’ (with my roommates) because of my work ethic and income rate. I’m actually terrified to death of it.

Work is looking up though, hopefully soon I’ll be getting more hours. I don’t have to worry about schedules clashing, and now I could probably even work college into the factor. I’m hoping that I’ll have enough time for it though, as FAFSA requires 8 credit-hours or something like that. Scary scary stuff.
